Winter Plumbing Tips for Preventing Frozen Pipes and More

Some pipes are more prone to freezing than others, particularly those exposed and in cold areas.

When the temperatures in winter drop below freezing, plumbing systems can be at quite a risk. Frozen pipes can easily burst under pressure and cause significant troubles, like water supply disruptions and floods.

However, with some preparation, frozen pipes and other winter plumbing woes can be undesirable but unlikely. Here are some tips to keep pipes safe:

Insulate pipes

Some pipes are more prone to freezing than others, particularly those exposed and in cold areas. So, insulate the pipes in crawl spaces, attics, and outside walls with foam or heating tape. For particularly vulnerable pipes, use both options.

Seal drafts

When there are gaps around pipes where they enter the house, it's good to seal them with caulk or insulation. This way, they won't be directly exposed to cold air. Pay particular attention to gaps in basements and attics. After all, these rooms often don't get as much heating as the rest of the house.

Keep a drip

Even though letting water drip seems counter-intuitive initially, it protects the pipes from bursting under pressure. Let some water trickle from faucets connected to exposed pipes when temperatures are particularly low so the water inside doesn't freeze, expand, and cause the pipe to burst.

Consistent temperatures

Fluctuating indoor temperatures can be unkind to the plumbing, especially if the variation is too great. Keep the thermostat at the same temperature day and night, and don't set it too low, even when no one is home.

Vacations

Consider the thermostat setting if the family is going on vacation. While it might be tempting to turn the heating off, keep the thermostat no lower than 55°F. Alternatively, shut off the main water supply and drain the system to keep it from freezing.

Outdoor faucets and hoses

There's no need to keep outdoor faucets and hoses connected during winter, especially if they're used exclusively for maintaining the lawn and yard. Therefore, disconnect them and use insulated covers for the faucets and hose bibs to keep them warm.

Check for leaks

Stay cautious, even after trying to insulate the pipes and installations. Check pipes for leaks, especially if anything unusual occurs, such as unusually high humidity or low water pressure. Also, watch for unexplained spikes in water bills, as those could also point to a hidden leak.

Be ready for emergencies

The unexpected can still happen even when prepared, so be ready to act in emergencies. Know the shut-off valve's location, and keep an emergency plumber's contact info at hand. If winter has caused burst pipes, it's an issue that needs professional repairs. Luckily, many are available all day, every day, to assist when most needed.
